BOOKCROSSING

Bova's public library, with its small open-air huts of books scattered around the village, has joined BookCrossing.com, a free online book club founded in 2001 with the aim of 'making the world a library'.

Bookcrossers leave their books in all sorts of places: on public transport, on benches, in telephone boxes and bars, for others to find and read, and then put them back into circulation. In Bova, the books are placed in small open-air houses scattered around the village, in those vantage points where international tourists stop to admire the unique landscape of Greek Calabria. The mechanism of Bookcrossing revolves around the existence of the website BookCrossing.com, through which it is possible to give books a unique identification code (BCID - BookCrossing ID), apply the corresponding labels to the book and then share it, an action that can be done in several ways: through 'controlled release', i.e. giving the book to a known person or sending it directly to someone who is interested in it. By 'free release', leaving the book in a public place for people to find, or leaving it in an 'official BookCrossing Zone' (as in Bova), a place where books come and go.... Whoever finds the book should report the find on the site and leave it there in turn to give other people the same opportunity. The unique BookCrossing ID (BCID) makes it possible to track the movement of books around the world, while at the same time making people aware or curious about where they come from. With BookCrossing, therefore, not only the paths of books are intertwined, but also the lives of those involved and the histories of territories.... It is a kind of passport that allows you to follow the book as it travels, thanks to a simple label, but also to connect people and places.
